EMS Long Range Strategic Plan

  1. Guarantee that EMS is at the cutting edge of the core scientific areas: DNA damage, DNA repair, mutagenic mechanisms, molecular epidemiology, DNA technology/genomics and human health effects/risk assessment.

    1. Organize meetings

    2. Leverage resources towards funding DNA sciences

    3. Provide a home for sub-disciplines

    4. Maintain a top quality journal

    5. Advocate for increased research funding in basic and applied DNA sciences

    6. Create alliances with other groups - ex. MEGS, FASEB

    7. Organize scientific focus/priorities in our core scientific areas

    8. Foster the use of sound science to improve risk assessment

  2. Establish a firm organizational and financial basis

    1. Improve management functions/operations

    2. Write SOP’s/Task lists

    3. Meet annually with management organization

    4. Generate standard agendas for all standing meetings

    5. Charge the Finance Committee to:

      1. Keep the society on a firm financial basis

      2. Provide advice on and monitor investments

      3. Examine options for investing in our future

      4. Assist Treasurer

  3. Facilitate professional development of members including students

    1. Attract and retain top scientists in the field

    2. Provide networking opportunities for members

    3. Mentor students

    4. Provide training

    5. Provide information about funding resources; facilitate members ability to compete

    6. Provide mechanism for resource sharing and collaboration

    7. Provide job resources

  4. Promote national and international outreach

    1. Contribute to and support national and international harmonization

    2. Connect with other groups who lobby Congress concerning funding and policy issues related to support of science

    3. Provide international outreach via Hollaendar committee activities: Internet based training, support of scientist from developing nations to attend EMS meetings, and support of meetings in developing nations

    4. Play an active role in IAEMS

  5. Shape and promote image

    1. Advertise meeting well in advance

    2. Enhance Web site - more information, links

    3. Create a presence at other meetings

    4. Promote our journal

    5. Promote the annual meeting in local venues; activate local committee

    6. Recruit top scientists for each meeting

    7. Provide training materials for universities, government, industry (e.g. slide sets); core education modules

    8. Foster the use of sound science to improve risk assessment
