Charges:

  1. Plan and be responsible for the annual student receptions. Write letters of invitation to students attending the annual meeting, inviting them to the student receptions. Coordinate other necessary aspects of the student reception with the program chair.

  2. Review the Society’s activities during the past year with respect to students. Make recommendations to Council on changes in activities or additional activities to encourage more active student participation.

  3. Develop and propose a summer research internship program for undergraduate students with EMS members. Establish one internship for student research to be sponsored by the EMS. Each summer research internship would provide a stipend of $3000. The award would be competitive. The recipient(s) would carry out a research project in the laboratory of an EMS member, subject to approval by a subcommittee of the EMS Education and Student Member Committee.

  4. Develop approaches for increasing minority student involvement in the society.

  5. Identify and encourage students for active involvement in EMS committees.

  6. Evaluate success of breakfast program for students and senior scientist at the annual meeting and determine whether it should be continued.

  7. Identify student programs at universities/colleges local to annual meeting to specifically involve in meeting. New addition to this is the reduced rate/free day for qualified students.

  8. When applicable, select student submissions to be presented at the student reception and arrange for judging of student posters. Evaluate having an award for the best student paper and non-student paper at the annual meeting.

  9. Develop recommendations for attracting students and new investigators to the Society. Consider specifically inviting new scientists and graduate students to present their work and/or attend the annual meeting of the Society, for example, by adding text to the meeting announcement and call for papers that directly encourages students to participate.

  10. In conjunction with the Management Company, the Chair of the Public Relations and Communication Committee and the Program Chair, prepare information for faculty and students of the local area universities and colleges of the annual meeting. Invite them for limited attendance with no registration fee.

  11. In conjunction with the Management Company, consider arrangements that will allow more students to stay at the meeting site at affordable rates. These may include but are not limited to: roommate matching; limited numbers of reduced rate rooms.

  12. Investigate outside funding sources to support Student Achievement awards independent of the EMS funds. Notify the Awards and Honors committee 30 days before the award application deadline of availability of funds.

  13. Work with Student Achievement winners, as well as all students, to involve them in the operations of the EMS including committee membership.
