Mission Statement

The mission of the Alexander Hollaender Committee of the Environmental Mutagen Society is to broaden the opportunities in mutagenesis research internationally for scientists and students from countries where such opportunities are historically underrepresented.

Charges

1. Develop recommendations for support educational and scientific activities related to environmental mutagenesis in countries which can benefit significantly from such. Include recommendations about the following types of activities:

a. Travel support for students and senior scientists from these countries to attend scientific meetings of the EMS.
b. Support for scientists to be brought to North America for laboratory training.
c. Subscriptions of the Society Journal to individuals and/or institutions in these countries. Assess the benefits of this program.
d. Sponsorship or assistance with international training courses, workshops, or scientific meetings. Propose activities that could be supported under this program and develop criteria and a mechanism for allocating funds to programs worthy of support.
e. In conjunction with the Awards and Honors Committee, provide recognition to senior scientists who have made significant contribution towards promoting the field of environmental mutagenesis in their country and the surrounding region - e.g. the EMS-Hollaender International Fellow Award

2. Suggest ways in which the activities can be used to increase awareness of this program.

3. Address the needs of interested scientists in countries where low budgets and salaries or the inability to obtain US dollars preclude individuals from joining the EMS. Procedures are needed to identify such individuals. Describe ways by which the Society or its members can provide dues and journal subscriptions.
a. Develop and maintain a list of individuals and institutions that would benefit from Society membership and a Journal subscription(s). The committee needs to re-evaluate the list of scientists that are receiving the journal. The original commitment was for 5 years. Any scientists that have been receiving the journal should be removed on the list, unless justification is presented for the continued receipt of the journal. Working with EMS business office and Wiley Liss, the numbers should be confirmed (27 or 29) and the list updated.
b. Develop ways to select the most suitable candidates and to provide for their needs in the most economical way (e.g., using overrun journal sets at the end of a year) to help the maximum number of people. Consideration will have to be given to fair ways to rotate recipients if the number of people should exceed the available resources.
c. Make recommendations to benefit foreign members and ways in which costs for such activities may be defrayed. d. Publicize and facilitate opportunities for EMS members to sponsor members in these countries.

4. A member of the Executive Board should be included on the committee.

5. Beginning in FY 2006-2007 there will no longer be a budget line item for the Hollaender Committee, but there will be a budget line item for support of Hollaender Courses based upon approved proposals. All proposals must be prepared according to agreed upon guidelines, reviewed by the committee and send to the Executive Board for approval.

a. Develop guidelines for application, review and selection of applicants for proposals.
