October 2 - 6, 2004, Pittsburgh Hilton, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Sponsors of the EMS 2004 Annual Meeting (Sept 12, 2004)
Find all the key information on Pittsburgh 2004:
The Environmental Mutagen Society is the primary society for scientists involved in environmental mutagenesis, the consequences of mutation such as cancer, and the evaluation of mutagenic and carcinogenic risks. The Annual Meeting provides attendees with a unique opportunity to learn about recent and important advances in these and related areas. The meeting brings together teachers and basic scientists with those striving to assess the safety of environmental and pharmaceutical agents. The result is a dynamic meeting that is sufficiently large to cover a broad range of contemporary topics yet focused and small enough to facilitate interactions between students and renowned scientists. We invite you to join us in Pittsburgh, and hope that you will enjoy the historical and cultural attractions while renewing old friendships and making new acquaintances.
The conference will be held at the Hilton Pittsburgh and Towers, 600 Commonwealth Place Gateway Center, Pittsburgh, PA, 15222, USA. Wheelchair accessible rooms are available. Persons with special needs should inform the hotel when making reservations. Check-in time is 3:00 PM and check-out time is 12:00 noon. This is a forum to discuss the pros and cons of the SHE cell transformation assay, why it fell out of favor and why it is now back and making its way into the regulatory arena. A variety of speakers representing the spectrum of opinions have agreed to participate. Each presentation will include data and perspectives relative to the predictability of this assay in cancer risk assessment. The session will also address whether this assay can be useful in regulatory decision-making, and whether the SHE cell assay is ready for use now. The forum is included in the meeting registration fee. Alternatively, those wishing to attend only the forum can register separately for that session on the registration form.
The free afternoon activity on Tuesday is designed to highlight the wonderful characteristics of Pittsburgh by water and land. Explore the city by water aboard the Gateway Clipper for a two hour Fall Foliage Cruise. The exploration continues by land with a tour of the Andy Warhol Museum.
Enjoy the Monongahela, Allegheny and Ohio Rivers as you cruise upon America’s premier riverboat, which presents an unforgettable experience that truly captures the personality of a great river city-Pittsburgh. Entertainment during the cruise will be provided by the Gateway Clipper House Band. Lunch will be provided and a cash bar will be available during the cruise.
A visit to Pittsburgh would not be complete without a stop at the acclaimed Andy Warhol Museum. The Museum features extensive permanent collections of art and archives of one of the most influential American artists of the twentieth century. It is also a primary resource for anyone seeking insights into contemporary art and popular culture.
This free-afternoon activity is an opportunity to relax with your colleagues while viewing the sites of Pittsburgh. Transportation is included. You must register to participate in the tour. Please make your selection on the registration form.
A special poster session and reception will be held Saturday evening from 5:00 PM - 8:00 PM. This session will provide an opportunity for students and new or post-doctoral investigators to present their data to the meeting attendees. On Monday at 7:00 AM - 8:30 AM, students and new investigators are invited to attend a free breakfast workshop.
Rather than register and attend the entire conference, a student (not a post-doctoral investigator) may attend free of charge for one day only; food and tour not included. Application for this option should be made in advance, through the EMS Headquarters. Please (1) state the day you wish to attend and (2) include a letter from your department chair stating that you are a student in good standing in that department.
EMS invites nominations for (1) The EMS Annual Award, for outstanding basic research in the field of environmental mutagenesis; (2) The Alexander Hollaender Award, for significant applied work in the field of environmental mutagenesis; (3) The EMS Service Award, for sustained dedication and service to the goals, operation and welfare of the EMS; and (4) Student Achievement Awards, which provide partial support for students to attend the EMS annual meeting.
