International

The EMS is affiliated with the International Association of Environmental Mutagen Societies (IAEMS), which has 11 society members, who collectively have members from over 50 countries. The membership is composed of a unique mix of academic, government, and industrial scientists and policy makers.
EMS has three representatives on the IAEMS Council, which are nominated every four years. The current representatives are:

Priscilla K. Cooper, Ph.D.
Andrew J. Wyrobek, Ph.D.
Barbara S. Shane, Ph.D.

Regional

EMS members are also founding supporters of grassroots associations including the Genetic Toxicology Association (GTA), the Genetic and Environmental Toxicology Association (GETA) (Northern California), and the Genetic and Environmental Mutagen Society (North Carolina) (GEMS).

Federation

Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB)

The Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology (FASEB) advances biological sciences through collaborative advocacy for research policies that promote scientific progress and education and lead to improvements in human health. The strength of FASEB comes from the Member Societies and the individuals who belong to these organizations. In Washington, FASEB is the voice of scientists in biology and is the primary liaison between the biomedical research community and the federal government. FASEB keeps Congress and the public informed on issues impacting biomedical research, including federal science funding, the importance of animal research, stem cell policies, and training and career opportunities for scientists.

EMS Representatives to FASEB

Committee and Subcommittee membership is drawn from FASEB member societies. To get involved, contact the EMS Business Office or the EMS FASEB Board Representative.

The current EMS representative to the FASEB Board is Laura J. Niedernhofer.

Coalition Activities

Coalition activities include those in which the independent Federation Member Societies wish to act as one, bringing together the influence of over 84,000 bio-science professionals. FASEB coordinates these activities and brings specific expertise to bear on Society priorities, enabling the successful completion of objectives, or the continuation of ongoing programs vital to the life science community.

Public Affairs
A hallmark coalition activity, and one for which FASEB is cited as a successful example among scientific disciplines, is the work of the Office of Public Affairs (OPA). OPA activities advance the interests of individual investigators in the biomedical sciences and are guided by FASEB Society Members who serve on the Public Affairs Executive Committee. FASEB is recognized as the principal voice of the biomedical research community on issues related to research funding and research integrity.

Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC)
The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) program was created by the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) to increase the number of biomedical scientists from minority groups. A key objective of the MARC program is the encouragement of minority students in the pursuit of graduate training leading to the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical sciences. EMS members meeting the MARC requirements should apply to receive funding to attend the EMS Annual Meetings.

Career Resources
Job postings, grantsmanship and job fair listings.

Summer Research Conferences
Since the early 1980's, the FASEB Summer Research Conferences have served more than 24,000 scientists from throughout the world in the field of experimental biology. The goal of these conferences is communication among leaders in each field to expand research and find solutions to crucial biomedical problems.

The FASEB Journal
The FASEB Journal is the official publication of the Federation and an essential element of its educational program. It is peer-reviewed by an international editorial board comprised of scientists widely recognized in their respective fields.
