EMS 2009 Annual Meeting

The Education, Student and New Investigator Affairs Committee of the EMS is seeking nominations for the EMS Student Education Award. This award seeks to recognize mentors who deserve appreciation for their impact on the careers of EMS members. This is a special opportunity for those students who want to nominate a candidate to receive an award during the 2009 EMS meeting in St. Louis. Current student and those who have received their degree within the last five years (New Investigators) are eligible to submit nominations. Please note that although the nominators do not have to be EMS members, the nominee must be an EMS member.

Each nominee needs to have a primary nominator and a supporting nominator. No additional paperwork is needed, just the nomination forms (2 per nominee). Please consider nominating that person who made a difference in your career!!! Nominations are requested by September 15, 2009. Completed forms should be sent to EMS Headquarters.

Student and New Investigator Travel Awards

Students and new investigators are eligible for Travel Awards, which provide partial support to attend the EMS Annual Meeting. These travel awards are based primarily on merit. Membership is a requirement that must be met prior to the final ranking. Membership can be obtained at any time via the EMS Web site. The number of travel awards funded is based on the budget approved by Council. New investigators are defined as individuals who have received their doctoral degrees within the past three years. Awards will be presented during the Business Meeting.

In keeping with EMS tradition, a student from a developing country currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in the USA or Canada is eligible to receive the Alexander Hollaender Travel Award. The applicant must indicate their desire to be considered for this award during the submission of their application.

Applicants must submit their abstract via the designated abstract submission system by June 8. Submissions should follow the general guidelines and format for EMS abstracts as described in the instructions. Although the inclusion of data in the abstract is not a requirement, abstracts for Travel Award submissions should not simply be a description of experiments that are planned or contemplated. It is not appropriate to state that "results will be presented at the meeting." Applicants should indicate during the submission of their abstract their intention for applying for a travel award. The application is not complete until the recommendation letter and abstract have been submitted to EMS Headquarters. The recommendation letter should be submitted as a PDF or Word file and should be accompanied by a copy of the submitted abstract.

Award applications will be acknowledged by e-mail. The deadline to submit complete application materials with a copy of the submitted abstract is June 14, 2009.

Student and New Investigator Poster Awards

Student and new investigator poster presentations will be included in the regular poster sessions and will be specially marked. Two awards will be given to recognize outstanding presentations. To be considered for the award, the abstract must be presented by a student or new investigator.

FASEB MARC Awards

The FASEB MARC Program provides funding for travel awards to support the participation of Faculty/ Mentors and Students, and Poster/Platform (Oral) Presenters at selected scientific meetings and conferences. The awards help to defray meeting registration and travel-related expenses (lodging, transportation, per diem) associated with meeting/conference attendance. Travel awards are processed as reimbursements to the award recipients. An award recipient will be required to pay his/her meeting- and travel-related expenses first, and then request reimbursement from the FASEB MARC Program Office after completion of the meeting/conference. The deadline to apply for the FASEB MARC Awards is September 15, 2009.
