PLENARY LECTURE: Dogs Chasing Cancer Clues
When it comes to aging and cancer, pets and people are in the same
boat. The epidemic of cancer and other age-related diseases we share
with our pets is an unfortunate, but expected, byproduct of our domesticated
life-styles, which favor longevity. A silver lining is that domestication's
curse offers comparative oncologists a new PATH to Progress®–an
opportunity to put pet dogs with naturally-occurring cancers on a central
path to discovering new treatments and preventives for human cancer.
Moreover, the intriguing similarities between the cancers of people
and pets–once a mere curiosity–provide a precious field
laboratory to study the role of genetic and non-genetic factors in
cancer susceptibility. |
